This tutorial is my own creation;
however, most of the techniques used in this tutorial, I have learned from others!
Therefore, if you recognize any contribution you have made, I thank you!
And I thank you as well for respecting this as my work by not posting it,
in whole or in part,
in any other location without written permission from me!
Individuals and PSP graphics groups are invited to share my tutorials with others with TEXT LINKS ONLY.
You can e-mail me to let me know you are adding one or more of my tutorials to your list if you like -
it's always fun to know who is doing them!
Continuing on my quest to explore some of the built-in effects of Paint Shop Pro, I fell in love with the brush strokes effect! It makes such wonderful frames! Here's the second I've created using this effect! Have fun! About a month after I originally published this tutorial, I changed my tutorial writing style. Instead of including paths for effects and detailed how-to's for techniques, I now write the entire tutorial as more of a narrative. This format was overwhelmingly welcomed by all users, and all my tutorials have been written in this style since then. Therefore, in this PSP8 version, I will use the new style as well. For those veterans among you, this is a welcome relief! And for those less familiar with PSP, the "Glossary" contains all the details omitted in the tutorial! If you need a little extra help, check the Glossary section! It's on a separate page, so print it if you like, and follow along. To view the Glossary, just click on the button below - the Glossary will open in a new window.

This tutorial assumes you have a working knowledge of Paint Shop Pro at the intermediate level (or advanced beginner level with the Glossary). It was originally written in and for PSP Version 7, but has been completely revised for PSP 8. Screen shots in this tutorial are resized - your work will be larger than this!
Supplies - For this tutorial, you will need the following:
- Jasc's Paint Shop Pro 8 - you can get the 30-day trial version HERE.
- An image to frame.

Ok, now we're ready to begin! Grab your mouse, and let's go create!
Remember to save often!

STEP 1
Open the image you have chosen to frame. Resize to 250 pixels on the longest side. Add a 15-pixel border using a medium color from your image - I used #8D7163. Select this border and apply a Brush Strokes effect using the Impasto preset. Just in case you don't have this preset, here are the settings:
Softness (80), Bristles (256), Width (3), Opacity (50),
Length (20), Density (12), Angle (101), Color (#A6937E)Apply an Inner Bevel effect using the following settings:
Bevel (#2), Width (4), Smoothness (20), Depth (4), Ambience (0),
Shininess (13), Color (white), Angle (315), Intensity (50), Elevation (30)Invert this selection and apply a Cutout Effect using the following settings:
Vertical offset (0),
Horizontal offset (0),
Shadow color (black),
Opacity (89),
Blur (26.3)Deselect and SAVE!
STEP 2
Add a 20-pixel border using a darker shade of the same color you used in Step 1 - I used #54443C. Select this border and apply the same Brush Strokes effect as in Step 1.
Invert the selection and apply a Drop Shadow effect with the following settings:
Vertical offset (9),
Horizontal offset (9),
Opacity (80),
Blur (8.6),
Shadow color (black)Re-apply the drop shadow, changing only the Vertical offset to minus 9.
Re-apply the drop shadow, changing only the Horizontal offset to minus 9 (leave the Vertical offset as minus 9).
Re-apply the drop shadow, changing the Vertical offset back to 9 (leave the Horizontal offset as minus 9).
Deselect and SAVE!
STEP 3
Add a 15-pixel border using the original medium color. Select this border and apply the same Brush Strokes and Inner Bevel effects as in Step 1.
And that's it! Now all you need to do is watermark and save!
Don't forget to sharpen your image if you resize it at this point - I used Unsharp Mask, with Radius = 2.00, Strength = 50, and Clipping = 5!
Here's another frame I made - the photo is of the tall ships in the Camden, Maine harbor:
