This tutorial is my own creation;
however, most of the techniques used in this tutorial, I have learned from others!
Therefore, if you recognize any contribution you have made, I thank you!
And I thank you as well for respecting this as my work by not posting it,
in whole or in part,
in any other location without written permission from me!

Individuals and PSP graphics groups are invited to share my tutorials with others with TEXT LINKS ONLY.
You can e-mail me to let me know you are adding one or more of my tutorials to your list if you like -
it's always fun to know who is doing them!

While continuing to explore the Effects built in to Paint Shop Pro, I came up with several ideas, including the one for this frame, which uses the Colored Edges Artistic Effect and the Geometric Ripple Effect. Hope you enjoy it!

I also tried something different in this tutorial. Instead of including paths for effects and detailed how-to's for techniques, I wrote the entire tutorial as a narrative. For those veterans among you, this will be a welcome relief! But for those less familiar with PSP, I included a "Glossary" that contains all the details omitted in the tutorial! If you need a little extra help, check the Glossary section! It's on a separate page, so print it if you like, and follow along. To view the Glossary, just click on the button below - the Glossary will open in a new window.

I don't think I've ever seen a tutorial written in this fashion! I'd really like your opinion, either for or against, so I can decide whether to continue writing tutorials this way! Please EMAIL ME and tell me what you think! Thanks! Now, on to the Ripple Ribbon Frame!

This tutorial assumes you have a working knowledge of Paint Shop Pro at the intermediate to advanced level, and is written in and for PSP Version 7. It will probably work just as well in version 6, with a few adjustments in paths!

Screen shots in this tutorial are resized - your work will be larger than this!

Supplies - For this tutorial, you will need the following:

Ok, now we're ready to begin! Grab your mouse, and let's go create!

Remember to save often!

STEP 1

Open the image you have chosen to frame, duplicate it, and close the original so you will have it to use again! Duplicate the active image and minimize the copy for now. Resize the active image to not more than 350 pixels on the longest side. Sharpen as needed.

Set the foreground style to "Pattern". Use the duplicate image as your pattern, with Angle = 45, and Scale somewhere around 50%, depending on the size of the individual components in the image - I used 28% for this image, as the major component was very large.

STEP 2

Set your background color to a contrasting color from your image - I chose #F7A048.

Add a symmetric 3-pixel border. Select the border, invert the selection, and apply a cutout with the following settings:

cutout settings
Vertical offset (0), Horizontal offset (0), Shadow color (black), Opacity (59), Blur (37.5)

Deselect and SAVE!

STEP 3

Set the background color to white, or any color not present in the image.

Add a symmetric 30-pixel border. Select the border and flood fill with the foreground pattern. Apply the Colored Edges Artistic Effect with the following settings (the color used for this effect is the same as the background color you chose in Step 1):

colored edges effect
Luminance (51), Blur (7), Color (background color chosen in Step 1) , Intensity (5)

Apply the Fine Leather Texture Effect, with the "Small Cracks" preset.

Deselect and SAVE!

STEP 4

Repeat Step 2

STEP 5

Add a new layer. Select all and contract the selection by 15 pixels. On the new layer, flood fill with the background color:

step 5 image

Contract the selection by 3 pixels, and hit the DELETE key:

step 5 image

Deselect and save.

STEP 6

Apply the Geometric Ripple Effect with the following settings:

ripple effect
Amplitude (10), Wavelength (36), Horizontal center (50), Vertical center (50)

Apply a Drop Shadow with the following settings:

drop shadow settings
Vertical offset (0), Horizontal offset (0), Opacity (88), Blur (21), Shadow color (black)

Apply an Inner Bevel with the following settings:

inner bevel
Bevel (1st one, top row), Width (18), Smoothness (8), Depth (46), Ambience (-29),
Shininess (0), Color (white), Angle (0), Intensity (60), Elevation (90)

And that's it! Now all you need to do is merge all layers, watermark and save!

Don't forget to sharpen your image if you resize it at this point.

Here's another frame I made using a lighter image:
