This tutorial is my own creation;
however, most of the techniques used in this tutorial, I have learned from others!
Therefore, if you recognize any contribution you have made, I thank you!
And I thank you as well for respecting this as my work by not posting it,
in whole or in part,
in any other location without written permission from me!

Individuals and PSP graphics groups are invited to share my tutorials with others with TEXT LINKS ONLY.
You can e-mail me to let me know you are adding one or more of my tutorials to your list if you like -
it's always fun to know who is doing them!

While continuing to explore the Effects built in to Paint Shop Pro, I came up with several ideas, including the one for this frame, which uses the Colored Edges Artistic Effect and the Geometric Ripple Effect. Hope you enjoy it!

When I originally wrote this tutorial, back in May of 2002, I tried something different. Instead of including paths for effects and detailed how-to's for techniques, I wrote the entire tutorial as a narrative. This format was overwhelmingly welcomed by all users, and all my tutorials have been written in this style since then. For those veterans among you, this is a welcome relief! And for those less familiar with PSP, the "Glossary" contains all the details omitted in the tutorial! If you need a little extra help, check the Glossary section! It's on a separate page, so print it if you like, and follow along. To view the Glossary, just click on the button below - the Glossary will open in a new window.

This tutorial assumes you have a working knowledge of Paint Shop Pro at the intermediate to advanced level. It was originally written in and for PSP Version 7, but has been completely revised for PSP 8.

Screen shots in this tutorial are resized - your work will be larger than this!

Supplies - For this tutorial, you will need the following:

Ok, now we're ready to begin! Grab your mouse, and let's go create!

Remember to save often!

STEP 1

Open the image you have chosen to frame, duplicate it, and close the original so you will have it to use again. Resize the active image to not more than 350 pixels on the longest side. Sharpen as needed.

Set the Foreground style to "Pattern", using your image as the pattern, with Angle = 45, and Scale somewhere around 50%, depending on the size of the individual components in the image - I used 28% for this image, as the major component was very large.

Set the Background style to "Color", and choose a contrasting color from your image - I chose #F7A048. Remember this color, as it will be used for some borders, and in the Colored Edges effect later.

STEP 2

Add a symmetric 3-pixel border, using the background color. Select the border, invert the selection, and apply a Cutout effect with the following settings:

Vertical offset (0),
Horizontal offset (0),
Shadow color (black),
Opacity (59),
Blur (37.5)

Deselect and SAVE!

STEP 3

Add a symmetric 30-pixel border, using white, or any color not present in the image. Select the border and flood fill with the foreground pattern. Apply the Colored Edges Artistic effect with the following settings (the color used for this effect is the same as the background color chosen in Step 1 above):

Luminance (51),
Blur (7),
Color (same as background color),
Intensity (5)

Apply the Fine Leather Texture effect, using the "Small Cracks" preset.

Invert the selection and apply a Drop Shadow with the following settings:

Vertical offset (0),
Horizontal offset (0),
Blur (21),
Opacity (88),
Shadow color (black)

Deselect and SAVE!

STEP 4

Repeat Step 2

STEP 5

Add a new layer. Select all and contract the selection by 15 pixels. On the new layer, flood fill with the background color:

step 5 image

Contract the selection by 3 pixels, and hit the DELETE key:

step 5 image

Deselect and save.

STEP 6

Apply the Ripple Distortion effect with the following settings:

Horizontal center offset (50),
Vertical center offset (50),
Amplitude (10),
Wavelength (36),
Edge mode (Repeat)

Apply a Drop Shadow with the same settings as above.

Apply an Inner Bevel effect with the following settings:

inner bevel
Bevel (1st one, top row), Width (18), Smoothness (8), Depth (46), Ambience (-40),
Shininess (0), Color (white), Angle (0), Intensity (60), Elevation (90)

And that's it! Now all you need to do is merge all layers, watermark and save!

Don't forget to sharpen your image if you resize it at this point.

Here's another frame I made using a lighter image:
